Terracotta Tiles Roof Restoration

ROOF RESTORATION

Why Does Your Terracotta Tiles Needs
To Be Restored?

While terracotta tiles supposed to last long than concrete tiles, they still need to be restored every 10-15 years to make them last long for an extended period of time. Because moss, fungus, algae start growing on them, they become bristle and weak in structure and eventually starts cracking here and there. Other thing, the moss on roof will not be aesthetically pleasing.

Furthermore, repointing on ridge caps start developing cracks in them which might leads few more places of leaks and ridgecaps might get blown away in strong gusts of wind.

Your roof might need valley replacement as old valley tends to get rusted. So, we assess the valley condition and see if it needs a full replacement or just repointing it will do the job.

Preperation Work Before Repointing

Prep work might includes Grinding all the ridge caps tops surface to remove old repointing from the ridge caps surface for better adhesion of flexible pointing.

Rebedding Of Ridge Caps

Your roof might needs full rebedding or partail rebedding of ridge caps on the roof if the mortar is loose under the ridgecaps or mortar is missing at some places. We will assess the situation while we are up there and will see if your roof needs rebedding which is a mix of sand and cement used to lay reidge caps before doing repointing of ridgecaps.

Clean Up

We clean up after the job is done and will take away all the rubbish, broken tiles from the job and leave your
place clean and tidy as possible.

SEALING

Roof Sealing

We seal your roof with clear glaze terracotta sealer which will protect the tiles from extreme weather condition. Now you must be thinking, why cannot we paint the terracotta tiles? We don’t recommened painting the terracotta tiles at all but again, if you still persist, it depends on types of terracotta tiles you are looking to get painted. However, all companies and roofers have different opinions regarding this, so, we are providing this information from our part of experience.

There Are Two Different Types Of Terracotta Tiles.

  • Glazed Terracotta Tiles We don’t recommend painting them at all because of the glaze already on them, the primer does not adhere good to the surface of these tiles and the paint will peel very quickly on them and will look worse than it was before.
  • Unglazed Terracotta Tiles These tiles can get painted but will need extremely good material to adhere to the surface of the tiles as these tiles are porous and they absorbs paint and primer more.

The cheap and common products might not give results you wanted. So, for this, you need best products which are made only for the terracotta unglazed tiles painting.
